Mexico, Cameron Named July 2024 Futures League Players of the Month

WEYMOUTH, Mass. (August 2, 2024) 一 Ahead of the start of postseason baseball next week, the Futures League has recognized its PLÁKATA! Player of the Month and 78 Sports Pitcher of the Month for July.

Brockton Rox and Louisiana Tech University outfielder Sebastian Mexico is the PLÁKATA! Player of the Month, having finished July with four doubles, two home runs, 14 RBI and 15 runs scored while hitting .343 across his 20 games. The Baldwinville, Mass., native started the month on a strong note, posting four multi-hit performances in his first eight July games to finalize a 13-game hit streak that remains tied for the league’s second-longest this summer. Mexico hit his second and third home runs as part of multi-hit efforts on July 7 against the Futures League Road Warriors and July 21 against Nashua. The league’s second-leading hitter through July, Mexico had a .357 average and league-best .508 slugging percentage for the season.

A Vermont Lake Monsters veteran in his fourth summer with the club, Wyatt Cameron of Central Connecticut State University is the 78 Sports Pitcher of the Month. Cameron made four July starts, going 2-0 while allowing just four earned runs on 13 hits and striking out 29 in 20.2 innings. The native of Salisbury, Vt., finished the month with a shutout of first-place and defending Futures League champion Norwich on July 26, pitching six innings of two-hit ball with four strikeouts. After allowing just one run in his first two starts during the month, Cameron fired a season-high 11 strikeouts over the first 4.2 innings of a July 18 win over New Britain.

The Futures League regular season finishes on Sunday, August 4, with the best-of-three semifinal round set to begin the following day. Cameron and the Lake Monsters are looking to make their fourth playoff appearance in as many summers, a stretch which began with an inaugural season championship in 2021.
