WEYMOUTH, Mass. (December 1, 2022) -- The Futures League today announced its schedule for the summer of 2023. The league’s 13th season of summer baseball action in New England will begin with all eight teams playing on Opening Day, which is scheduled for Wednesday, May 24.
The same eight-team lineup as the past two summers is set to take the field in 2023, including the reigning champion Nashua Silver Knights, two-time Organization of the Year Vermont Lake Monsters, as well as the Brockton Rox, New Britain Bees, Norwich Sea Unicorns, Pittsfield Suns, Worcester Bravehearts and Westfield Starfires.
The Futures League continues its momentum as one of the nation’s top summer collegiate circuits. Full crowds returned to all eight ballparks for the first time post-pandemic, leading to a 39 percent year-to-year attendance increase in 2022. After more than 339,000 fans attended games throughout the season, the league has played in front of 2.7 million spectators since its inception in 2011.
“It's always an exciting day when we release the schedule for the upcoming season,” Commissioner Joe Paolucci said. “I anticipate another summer of competitive baseball from start to finish and look forward to our fans seeing all of the hard work that the league’s eight franchises put in come to life in their communities.”
The 2023 regular-season schedule will run from May 24 until Sunday, Aug. 6, with the playoffs immediately following for approximately a week. Mondays will generally be a league-wide off day, except for Memorial Day (May 29) and Independence Day (July 4).
The season-opening slate on May 24 features two matinees and two night games. The morning slate has Worcester hosting Norwich at Hanover Insurance Park and Westfield welcoming New Britain into Bullens Field. Later that night, Brockton will trek to Vermont’s Centennial while Pittsfield entertains defending champion Nashua at Wahconah Park.
New Britain Stadium and Brockton’s Campanelli host home openers the following day, Thursday, May 25. Nashua makes its Holman Stadium debut on Saturday, May 27. Norwich’s return to Dodd Stadium is set for the night of Memorial Day.
Details regarding the Futures League All-Star Game, which is set for Tuesday, July 25, will be released in January. More than 3,000 fans attended the 2022 mid-summer event, the second straight held in New Britain.
After the regular season concludes on Sunday, Aug. 6, the four-team postseason bracket will include best-of-three series in both the semifinal and championship rounds. Nashua capped the 2022 season in dramatic fashion, defeating host Vermont in the deciding title game in front of a sold-out Centennial Field crowd.
“This schedule is very challenging for our players, but it really prepares them for a career in professional baseball,” Paolucci said
The first-of-its-kind “Home Run Derby Wins It” tiebreaker returns for the seventh consecutive season in 2022. Once again, all regular-season league games tied after one extra inning will be decided with a shootout-style home run derby.
