Thirty-Two Futures Leaguers Drafted by MLB Teams

WEYMOUTH, Mass – On June 3rd, 2019, the 2019 MLB First-Year Player Draft kicked off in Secaucus, New Jersey. The draft spanned three days with 1,217 high school and college players selected by the 30 MLB teams. Though there were no Futures League players selected on day one, days two and three were packed with former and current players familiar with the Futures League.

The first notable selection was 2017 Bristol Blues player, UConn Huskie and Methuen, Mass native, Jacob Wallace, who was selected 100th overall by the Colorado Rockies. In 2017 for the Blues, Wallace pitched in 8 games, recording a save while striking out 17 hitters in 17 innings of work.

Next off the board was Boston College Eagle and 2015 North shore Navigator Dan Metzdorf who played in the Futures League following his senior year of high school. He was selected 140th by the Chicago White Sox. The Burlington, Mass native worked 35 innings in the summer of 2015, posting a 1-1 record with a 3.85 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 35 innings.

Of the 32 former Futures Leaguers selected, five were rostered in 2019. Gatorade Player of the Year, Sebastian Keane from North Andover, Mass, was selected 347th by the Boston Red Sox. Marcus Lee Sang, was drafted 300th by the Philadelphia Phillies. Both were rostered by North Shore for 2019. Kenny Turner from the University of Hartford, rostered by the Bristol Blues this year, was drafted 595 by the Texas Rangers. Rostered in 2019 by the Pittsfield Suns, Oklahoma State University’s Caeden Trinkle and Bryce Osmond were selected 830th by the White Sox and 1,053rd by the Washington Nationals respectively.

32 of 1,217 may seem like a small number but these 32 former Future Leaguers were drafted by 19 different MLB teams from 23 different schools, 20 NCAA schools, two high schools and one Junior College. These players played for nine different Futures League teams including six current teams in the league, excluding the Westfield Starfires who are new in 2019.

Congratulations to all of the players from 2015-2019 who are former and current members of the Futures League who were selected in the 2019 MLB First-Year Player Draft. See the full list of draftees below.
