Futures League Well Represented in 2025 MLB Draft; 24 Current & Former Players Selected

ROCKLAND, Mass. (July 25, 2025) 一 Twenty-four Futures League players and alumni were selected in the Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft earlier this month, which ran for 20 rounds from July 13-14. It is the highest draft total for the league since 2021 and the third in that span to include at least 20 picks.

The draft class began with 2025 Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Year and Golden Spikes Award finalist Liam Doyle (Nashua ‘22) becoming the highest-drafted player in Futures League history as the St. Louis Cardinals’ fifth overall selection out of Tennessee. Doyle was the first of seven league alumni chosen across Sunday’s first three rounds, which represents another all-time high mark.

In the second round, Florida State’s 2025 Dick Howser Trophy winner and Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year Alex Lodise (New Britain ’23) went to the Atlanta Braves at No. 60 overall, while fellow shortstop and Virginia commit Nick Becker (Vermont ‘25-rostered) went off the board three picks earlier to the Seattle Mariners.

A run of three straight Lake Monsters drafted began with the Boston Red Sox selecting their first of two players with a Futures League past in Virginia second baseman Henry Godbout (Vermont ‘22), who was the 75th overall pick in the second compensation round. Wake Forest third baseman and Newton native Jack Winnay (Vermont ‘23) was the other, going to his hometown team in the 13th round.

Georgia Tech shortstop Kyle Lodise (Vermont ‘23) and Rutgers outfielder Trevor Cohen (Vermont ‘23) rounded out the Lake Monster trifecta in the third round, as they were picked by the Chicago White Sox and San Francisco Giants, respectively. The league’s third and final third-round draftee was University of Cincinnati outfielder Landyn Vidourek (New Britain ‘24), who will join the organization of the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers.

San Francisco’s Futures League connection grew deeper when the picks resumed on Monday with Northeastern left-hander Jordan Gottesman (Worcester ‘24) being taken in the sixth round. He was the first of 16 league alumni selected on the day.

Rhode Island’s all-time home run leader Anthony DePino (New Britain ‘22) led off four alumni selected in the seventh round. Also highlighting the picks in that round, former Futures League Home Run Derby champion Cam Maldonado (Norwich ‘22) followed his Northeastern teammate Gottesman to the Giants, while Arizona pitcher Julian Tonghini (New Britain ‘21) and Yale pitcher Colton Shaw (New Britain ‘22) were chosen by the Washington Nationals and Seattle Mariners, respectively.

A pair of former Bravehearts were picked next, as Arizona State pitcher Jack Martinez (Worcester ‘23) was an eighth-round pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Fordham third baseman Daniel Bucciero (Worcester ‘23) joined the Athletics in the ninth round.

UConn’s Big East Player of the Year Ryan Daniels (New Britain ‘22) heard his name called by the Minnesota Twins in the 11th round, while fellow Husky Brady Afthim (Brockton ‘21) joined the pitching pipeline of the Cincinnati Reds two rounds later. Three other Futures League products were also selected in the 13th round, including Winnay, Harvard pitcher Callan Fang (Vermont ‘23) and Northeastern shortstop Jack Goodman (Worcester ‘22), the latter who was also drafted out of Medfield High School during his summer with the Bravehearts.

The first of two draftees from this summer’s Futures League rosters was Killingly High School pitcher and Northeastern commit Landon Manzi (Norwich ‘25), a 14th-round pick by the Texas Rangers. A year after earning Futures League All-Star and Championship MVP honors, Seton Hall outfielder AJ Soldra (Norwich ‘24) was drafted in the 16th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Avon Old Farms and Georgia Tech-committed pitcher Cole Raymond (Westfield ‘25) became the second current league pick, going to the Los Angeles Angels in the 17th round.

Penn State third baseman Bryce Molinaro (New Britain ‘23) was also called before the end of the 17th round by the Washington Nationals, while Northeastern righty Aiven Cabral (Nashua ‘22) 一 whose 12 strikeouts in a single postseason game remain a Futures League record 一 earned a call from the Atlata Braves in the 18th round.

All six current Futures League franchises and one former were represented among the 2025 picks, which were made by 15 of the 30 MLB clubs. Three former Futures Leaguers were taken by San Francisco, while seven other clubs included multiple in their classes.
