All-Star Game just a week away
ROCKLAND, Mass. -- The Futures League regular season is heating up as the All-Star break is just a week away.
The Vermont Lake Monsters continue to set the pace in the standings following an undefeated week, but playoff races further down the standings are continuing to heat up. It was also an award-winning stretch for the New Britain Bees, who earned both Player and Pitcher of the Week honors.
The latest look around the Futures League covers the games of July 6-12.
Zephyr Hats Futures League Player of the Week: Owen Rich, New Britain Bees (Binghamton University)
Rich posted a 1.121 OPS while going 8-for-15 with three RBI, seven runs scored and six stolen bases across four games last week. He began the week with back-to-back 3-for-4 games, but ultimately hit safely and scored at least one run in all four. The infielder crossed the plate three times in New Britain's Sunday win at the Nashua Silver Knights. For the season, he is hitting .386 in 13 games.
Firecracker Sports Futures League Pitcher of the Week: Trey LaMay, New Britain Bees (Stonehill College)
New Britain earned repeat Pitcher of the Week honors, as LaMay pitched seven innings of two-hit ball with five strikeouts in his Saturday start against the Worcester Bravehearts. He faced just two batters over the minimum, allowing one unearned run on a pair of singles and one walk. The Connecticut native has not allowed an earned run in two of his last three outings.
TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES
LOWELL SPINNERS (16-25)
• Three victories last week have vaulted the Spinners into sixth place and just four games outside of fourth in the Futures League standings. The week concluded with a 13-0, run-rule win over Norwich on Sunday.
• Spencer Warfield (USC Upstate) finished a single shy of the cycle in the emphatic victory, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and eight RBI in his first action in the outfield since late June. Dylan Izenman (Mount St. Mary's) made it a nightly awards sweep for Lowell, pitching five shutout innings.
• Rising infielder Quincy Kerr (Northeastern) was 7-for-16 with five RBI and five runs scored on the week to help pace the Lowell offense.
• Matt Pappalardo (Endicott) dealt a shutout start to earn Wednesday's Pitcher of the Night award, striking out seven Worcester Bravehearts in five innings, while Lowell native Seamus Scott (UMass Lowell) pitched 3.1 innings of shutout relief across two appearances.
NASHUA SILVER KNIGHTS (19-19)
• Nashua finished the week 3-3, earning wins over Lowell and New Britain while improving to 19-18 on the season. The Silver Knights highlighted the week with an 8-5 comeback win over Lowell on July 6, a 9-6 victory over New Britain on July 10, and a 17-9 offensive outburst at Lowell on July 11.
• The Silver Knights opened the week by overcoming a 4-0 deficit to defeat Lowell 8-5 as Connor Smith (Gannon) collected three hits and an RBI, while Hudson Story (Bryant) and Mike Villani (Stony Brook) each drove in two runs. Nashua's bullpen was outstanding, with Brody Bump (Millersville) earning the win and Aaron Forgues (William & Mary) securing his third save of the season.
• After dropping a pair of contests to first-place Vermont, Nashua responded with a 9-6 win over New Britain behind a balanced offensive effort. Nate Kearney (Stonehill) went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Hunter Troiano (Gannon) and Ben Peterson (Saint Joseph's) each drove in two runs. Jameson Dobis (Bryant) earned the victory in relief, and Aaron Forgues (William & Mary) recorded his fourth save of the summer.
• The Silver Knights' offense continued to produce down the stretch, highlighted by a season-high 17 runs in the July 11 win at Lowell and 14 hits in the July 12 series finale against New Britain. Smith homered in the finale, while Sam Gettinger (Hofstra) added his first home run of the summer in Nashua's 7-6 loss to the Bees.
NEW BRITAIN BEES (21-16)
• The Bees' offense was led by Owen Rich (Binghamton), who went 8-for-15, had a .533 average, scored seven runs, and stole six bases. Michael Olender (LaSalle) went 2-for-3 with a double and a home run. George Slauson (UConn) went 6-for-12 with two RBI. Brady Chernovetz (Southern Connecticut) went 3-for-6 with two RBI while Tim Hennig (Binghamton) scored four runs.
• Trey LaMay (Stonehill) was outstanding in his start. He fired seven scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and striking out five to earn the win.
• Robby Wunsch (UMass Boston) also picked up a win, working five innings and allowing two earned runs on three hits with three strikeouts.
• The Bees got quality work out of the bullpen as well. Colby Dimenna (Western New England) struck out four over four innings, Alex Casey (Union) allowed just one run in two frames, and Dylan Swarts (Union) closed out a game with a strikeout for a save.
NORWICH SEA UNICORNS (16-20)
• The Sea Unicorns' lineup was paced by Henry Ayers (Middlebury) this past week. He went 5-for-9 with two RBI, and three walks. Mike Fiatarone (Bryant) reached base at a .611 clip with five runs scored, five walks, and three stolen bases. Jackson Powers (Saint Anselm) went 4-for-9, and TJ Baer (Marist) drove in three runs. David Pengel (Northeastern) kept it going with five RBI.
• Eric Mathewson (Eastern Connecticut State) was dominant on the mound, throwing five innings and giving up one run while striking out eight to earn the win.
• Janvier Diaz (Eastern Connecticut State) was perfect in relief, throwing two hitless, scoreless innings with four strikeouts to pick up a win. Jack Scholz (Catholic) anchored the bullpen as well, as he allowed just one earned run over 4.2 innings with five strikeouts.
• Jacob Schrage (Post) also earned a win, working four innings and allowing two earned runs with three strikeouts. Sean McGettigan (Monmouth) and Shaun Flannery (UConn) each logged a save out of the bullpen.
VERMONT LAKE MONSTERS (29-11)
• Vermont completed a perfect 6-0 week to maintain its firm grasp of the Futures League standings lead, earning wins over Norwich, Nashua, and Westfield while outscoring opponents 40-19.
• Hunter Strohm (Mississippi State) led the Lake Monsters' offense with seven runs scored, two doubles, four RBI, and two walks across all six games.
• Tyler Wiltsey (Rutgers) continued to produce in the middle of the lineup with four runs scored, one double, and a team-high five RBI.
• Reed Stygles (USC Aiken) turned in Vermont's top pitching performance, posting a 1.59 ERA over 5.2 innings, allowing four hits, one run (one earned), three walks, and striking out eight while earning the win.
WESTFIELD STARFIRES (15-24)
• Westfield went 0-3 on the week, facing a tough stretch against Vermont despite several strong individual performances on both sides of the ball.
• Nick Fox (Central Connecticut) 5-for-14 with five RBI, providing the Starfires' most consistent offensive contributions for the week. He hit homers in back-to-back games against the Lake Monsters in Burlington.
• Aiden Barclay (Cornell) also helped lead the lineup, going 3-for-6 in just two games, while Vance Bonior (UMass) continued to provide production with a pair of hits, a stolen base and two runs scored.
• Cam Fisher (UMass Boston) continued his dominant summer on the mound, leading the Futures League with 38 strikeouts in 30 innings. Thomas Pirog (Keene State) also turned in a solid outing with 3.2 hitless innings.
WORCESTER BRAVEHEARTS (19-21)
• Worcester opened the week with a difficult 0-5 stretch, dropping games to Lowell, Norwich, and New Britain.
• Benny Hess (Keystone) made the most of his opportunities with one triple, one RBI, and two walks, finishing with a .625 on-base percentage.
• Hunter St. Denis (Maine) paced Worcester's offense, batting 5-for-13 over four games to lead the team in hits during the week.
• Luke Martinez (Maritime College) turned in Worcester's best pitching performance, tossing 3 scoreless innings, allowing three hits, no walks, and striking out four.
