New Britain, Vermont holding down top of standings
ROCKLAND, Mass. -- Another Futures League week is in the books, with the New Britain Bees and Vermont Lake Monsters continuing to hold down the top two spots in the standings.
Vermont inched closer to the top by winning two of the teams' three head-to-head games over the weekend in New Britain, while the Worcester Bravehearts and Westfield Starfires both used multiple notable wins to rise into top-four positions.
This week's look around the Futures League covers the games of June 8-14.
Zephyr Hats Futures League Player of the Week: Peter Keblinsky, Nashua Silver Knights (University of Southern Maine)
Keblinsky went 8-for-16 with a double, a home run, 11 RBI, five runs scored, a walk and a stolen base last week. The third baseman recorded hits in all four of his games, including a pair of back-to-back three-hit efforts. He highlighted the week with a 3-for-4, five-RBI performance against Westfield last Thursday. Eleven of his 12 RBI on the season came during that span.
Firecracker Sports Futures League Pitcher of the Week: Josh Mayo, Westfield Starfires (Springfield College)
Pitching for his hometown team in Westfield, Mayo threw the first nine-inning shutout in Starfires history last Monday against Nashua. He struck out six while allowing just three hits and two walks en route to the complete game and his first victory of the season. Mayo has now thrown 10 consecutive scoreless innings since allowing three runs in his May 27 season-opening start and owns a 1.80 ERA in 15 innings on the summer.
TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES
LOWELL SPINNERS (5-11)
• The Spinners played five of their six games last week away from the home confines of LeLacheur Park, finishing the week with victories at Norwich and Worcester across a three-game span.
• First baseman Esteban Dessureault (Stetson) had six RBI across four games, including a go-ahead, three-run home run in Thursday's 7-6 win over the Sea Unicorns.
• Rising catcher Bradley McCafferty (Virginia) finished the week with six hits and five RBI, highlighted by his first home run of the summer.
• Dylan Izenman (Mount St. Mary's) and Graham Willerer (Sacred Heart) each struck out six in their starts, while Lowell native Caden Smith (Saint Anselm) allowed just one unearned run over five innings.
NASHUA SILVER KNIGHTS (7-10)
• The Silver Knights went 2-3 last week, highlighted by a 16-6 offensive outburst over Westfield and a 6-2 victory over Lowell. Nashua scored 42 runs across the five-game stretch, including three games with eight or more.
• The offense was paced by Futures League Player of the Week Peter Keblinsky (Southern Maine). Phoenix Williams (Mount St. Mary's) continued to set the tone at the top of the lineup, collecting multiple hits in three games, while Connor Smith (Gannon) and AJ Kolb (Towson) also delivered key offensive performances.
• On the mound, Cam Piwnicki (Brown) helped lead a strong staff effort in the win over Lowell, allowing just one unearned run over 4.2 innings. Sachin Gopal (Bentley) was also effective out of the bullpen, tossing four scoreless innings against Worcester and earning the win in relief against Lowell.
• Nashua showed resilience throughout the week, erasing deficits in both games at Worcester and continuing to display one of the league's more productive offenses heading into the next stretch of the season.
NEW BRITAIN BEES (10-6)
• The Bees' continued to receive strong contributions from the lineup and pitching staff during Week 3. This helped the Bees to stay competitive in their Futures League standings.
• Dylan Swarts (New Haven), led the offense with a .429 average with three hits and a run scored. Amato Civitello (UConn) made his impact with a .400 average with two hits, two runs scored, and three RBI.
• Garret Garbinkski (UConn) turned in one of the Bees' strongest pitching performances, throwing seven scoreless innings while allowing just four hits.
• Dominic Carollo (Salve Regina) continued his dominant summer, striking out six over three innings. Nathan Kempton also picked up a win after throwing 4.0 scoreless innings and allowing no hits.
NORWICH SEA UNICORNS (6-9)
• Norwich received several strong performances throughout the season to continue their season against a challenging league schedule.
• Kenny Noe (Monmouth) kept the Sea Unicorns steady batting .455 with five hits, three runs scored and five RBI. Jack O'Neil (Hobart) also delivered at the place, batting .444 with eight hits and six RBI.
• Matt Tabet (Amherst) held down the pitching staff with a dominant performance, throwing 5.0 scoreless innings while striking out seven, holding opposing hitters to a .105 batting average.
• Norwich received scoreless outings from Adam Carpenter (University of Rhode Island), Charlie Bushley (Bates), Sean Connolly (Stonehill), Peter Glidden (Southern Connecticut State), and Jack Scholz (Catholic), showing the depth of the pitching staff.
VERMONT LAKE MONSTERS (11-5)
• The Lake Monsters showcased a balanced effort throughout Week 3, receiving key performances from their offense and pitching staff as they continued their push in the standings.
• Elias Huber (Arizona Western) led Vermont's offense recording four hits, two runs scored and two RBI.
• Sam Labrecque (Oberlin) delivered one of Vermont's strongest pitching performances of the week, throwing three scoreless innings without allowing a hit.
• Finn Haines (Rutgers) was also effective on the mound, recording two scoreless innings while keeping opponents hitless.
WESTFIELD STARFIRES (8-9)
• Westfield native Josh Mayo (Springfield) carved his name into franchise history with the first nine-inning shutout ever thrown by a Starfire last Monday against Nashua, earning himself Pitcher of the Week honors.
• The Starfires will enter Week 4 ranked third in the FCBL in team pitching, riding a staff that delivered two shutout wins and allowed just four total runs across their final four games of the week.
• The Starfires scored 18 runs in wins over Lowell (June 10) and Norwich (June 14), highlighted by a six-run eighth inning against the Spinners.
• Dillon Harding (UMass Dartmouth) fired four scoreless innings of relief in Westfield's 11-5 comeback victory over Lowell, allowing just two hits while earning the win.
WORCESTER BRAVEHEARTS (9-7)
• The Bravehearts continued to receive strong contributions both in the field and behind the plate during Week 3. Their balanced performances helped Worcester remain competitive in the League standings.
• Alan Carpenter (Worcester State) led the offense collecting seven hits, scoring two runs, and driving in three. Andre Arthur (SNHU) also made a major impact with two hits, two runs scored, two RBI, and a home run.
• Gavin Price (Worcester State) turned in one of Worcester's strongest pitching performances of the week, throwing four scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and striking out two.
• Erik Swenson (UMaine) was dominant out of the bullpen, recording three hitless innings with three strikeouts.
