Weekly Rundown: 2019 Futures League Week 1

WEYMOUTH, Mass. -- The Futures League opened it’s 2019 season on Wednesday, May 29th, and it certainly lived up to the nine months of anticipation since the end of the 2018 season. From walk-off wins to no-hitters, the fans saw what the Futures League is all about.

Wednesday, May 29th

Brockton 9, Nashua 6

The Brockton Rox exploded for 9 runs of offense in a 9-6 victory over the Nashua Silver Knights on opening night. Mike Sabatine led the offense for the Rox going 2 for 5 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Gabe Giosso also had a good day for the Rox going 3 for 5 with a run scored. He was followed up in the lineup by designated hitter J.P. Knight, who added two RBIs on one hit. Nashua’s Jared Dupere had a good day at the plate in the team’s losing effort as he went 2 for 4 with three runs scored and an RBI.

Thursday, May 30th

Pittsfield 3, Bristol 2

The Pittsfield Suns scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to walk off with a 3-2 win in their home opener vs. the Bristol Blues. The walk-off came when Pittsfield’s Mark Coley hit into an error to shortstop to score the winning run. This came after a two-run double to center field by Kyle Cronk. The Blues out-hit the Suns 7-4 but errors proved to be costly for them. Austin White was the only Blues player to have multiple hits in a 2 for 5 performance with one run scored.

North Shore 9, Brockton 8

The North Shore Navigators and Brockton Rox both put up amazing offensive performances in a 9-8 victory for the Navigators. North Shore’s Andrew Olszak had a great day at the plate going 3 for 6 with two runs scored, two RBIs, and a solo home run in the third inning. Ben Maglieri also added two RBIs for the Navigators. Brockton’s Mitch Donofrio led the Rox in offense going 2 for 5 with one run scored and two RBIs.

Worcester 5, Nashua 2

Four Worcester Bravehearts pitchers combined for a no-hitter in a 5-2 victory over the visting Nashua Silver Knights. C.J. McKennitt and Jakob Sessa each had two RBIs for the Bravehearts and Aidan Wilde went 1 for 3 with two runs scored and one RBI. The Silver Knights did not have a hit during the game but scored two runs in the eighth inning on a dropped third strike and a pass ball. Joe Bramanti was the only player with an RBI for Nashua.

Brockton 7, Bristol 4

The Brockton Rox scored six runs in the sixth inning to break the game open and held on for the 7-4 victory over the Bristol Blues. Brockton’s Spenser Smith went 1 for 3 with three RBIs while Mike Sabatine added an RBI and a run scored on two hits. Bristol’s Dylan Reynolds and Anthony Donofrio both went 2 for 4 on the night. Reynolds had one run scored while Donofrio scored a run himself along with one RBI.

Pittsfield 3, Westfield 0

The Pittsfield Suns threw a one-hitter Friday night in a 3-0 victory over the Westfield Starfires in the Starfires first ever game in the Futures League. The Starfires made history when Andrew Ciacciarelli gave them their first ever hit with a single in the bottom of the ninth inning which also broke up the Suns no-hit bid. Pittsfield did not have any RBIs from any of their batters in the victory but had some great offensive showings from Dom Hughes and Matt Malcom. Hughes went 2 for 5 with a run scored while Malcom went 2 for 4 with a run scored.

North Shore 12, Worcester 4

The North Shore Navigators exploded for 12 runs on 14 hits in a 12-4 rout of the Worcester Bravehearts. Tyler MacGregor led the Navigators offense going 3 for 5 with four RBIs. Dominic Freeburger also pitched in with a three-run single while leadoff hitter Nolan Watson went 4 for 6 with two runs scored. Sean Lawlor and Louis Olivieri each had two RBIs as well for the Navigators. The Bravehearts struggled offensively throughout the game as they finished with just two hits. Both hits were singles by Jakob Sessa and P.J. Barry.

Bristol 13, Westfield 6 (Game 1 of doubleheader)

The Bristol Blues earned their first victory of the season on Saturday as they erupted for 13 runs to beat the Westfield Starfires 13-6 in the first game of a doubleheader. Two players had multi-hit games for the Blues as Austin White went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBIs and Nolan Cloutier went 2 for 4 with one run scored and two RBIs. Dylan Reynolds also added two RBIs and cleanup hitter Kasey Bass went 1 for 4 with three RBIs. Thomas Joyce shined for the Starfires going 1 for 2 with three RBIs.

Bristol 5, Westfield 2 (Game 2 of doubleheader)

In game 2 of the doubleheader, Bristol completed the sweep as they beat the Starfires 5-2. Will Reiner led the Blues offense going 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Austin White also had a good day as he finished 1 for 1 with a run scored and an RBI. It was a fairly uneventful day for the Starfires offense as Devin Kellogg and Tommy Quinn both had one hit with one RBI.

Pittsfield 8, Brockton 5

The Pittsfield Suns took the lead in a huge six-run third inning and never lost it as they defeat the Brockton Rox 8-5 at Wahconah Park in Pittsfield. Multiple players contributed for the Suns as seven different players finished with at least one RBI. Jack Khawly led the way going 2 for 4 with one run scored and two RBIs. Mitch Donofrio was one of the only bright spots in the Rox lineup as he finished 3 for 5 with one run scored and one RBI.

North Shore 6, Nashua 2

The North Shore Navigators scored six runs on just four hits Saturday night in a 6-2 victory over the visiting Nashua Silver Knights. The Silver Knights started off strong with one run in each of the first two innings but the Navigators pitching staff shut them down for the rest of the game. Three of the runs in the four-run fourth inning for the Navigators came from a deep three-run home run by Sean Lawlor. This inning proved to be the difference in this one.

Brockton 7, North Shore 3

The Brockton Rox held off a late comeback from the North Shore Navigators to earn a 7-3 victory to hand the Navigators their first loss of the season. Mitch Donofrio and Gaby Cruz both went 3 for 5 with an RBI in the game for the Rox and Spenser Smith also had a good day at the plate going 2 for 4 with two runs scored.

Pittsfield 4, Westfield 2

The Pittsfield Suns defeated the Westfield Starfires 4-2 on Sunday to remain undefeated and keep the Starfires from earning their first win of not only just the season, but in Futures League history. Jackson Petersen led the way for the Suns offense going 2 for 4 with one run scored and one RBI. Jeffrey Boggess also did some damage going 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Andrew Ciacciarelli and Tommy Quinn both went 2 for 4 with one RBI for the Starfires and Elijah Dale went 2 for 4 as well with one run scored.
